The team combined for three goals in five minutes and 32 seconds to erase a 3-1 deficit and force Montreal to pull their goalie, leading to an empty-netter by Milan Lucic (assisted by David Krejci and Kevan Miller) with just over a minute to go. Lucic’s 4th playoff goal capped the 5-3 win at home for the Bruins. Games 3 (Tuesday) and 4 (Thursday) will be in Montreal, but the Bruins have actually done better on the road in these playoffs than they’ve fared at home.

The Bruins got on the board early with the only score of the first period. Daniel Paille shook off the rust and launched his first successful shot on goal of these playoffs at the 13:02 mark of the period with assists from Carl Soderberg and Andrej Meszaros. The fact that there was only one goal in this furious first period is a testament to the masterful defensive play of both teams in the frame. There were eight penalties served in the first 20 minutes of play, four for each team. Paille’s goal didn’t even come during any of those power plays, either.

The Canadiens shut the Bruins out in the second period, scoring their first two goals exactly 17 minutes apart to bookend the shift. Mike Weaver struck first at the 1:09 mark (also scoring his first playoff goal this year) with assists from Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher. Thomas Vanek put the puck in the net for the second time in these 2014 playoffs on a power play opportunity at the 18:09 mark. P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty assisted on that scoring opportunity. Vanek took advantage of another 3rd period power play to score another goal and put his squad up 3 to 1 with 13:30 left to go in the game. Subban and David Desharnais assisted Vanek on Montreal’s third anf final goal of the game.

It was all Bruins in the final ten minutes of play with Dougie Hamilton starting the rally by scoring his second playoff goal just under 11 minutes into the final frame with assists from Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron. The Hamilton goal made it a one-point game until Bergeron tied the score with an assist from Brad Marchand at the 14:17 mark. Reilly Smith put the cherry on top of the sundae with his third playoff goal less than 2 minutes later at the 16:28 mark. The Canadiens appeared to be in shock as their defense disintegrated in the final minutes of a game they were winning handily going into the last period.

The Bruins are a resilient team, and their explosive four-game winning streak to end the last round of the playoffs is testament to how they can make adjustments after particularly tough losses. Look for this team to storm into Montreal and do whatever it takes to at least split the next two games and possibly even sweep them, keeping up their unbeaten road win streak over the course of this year’s playoffs.
